Bulgaria will host for first time the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM XXXVIII) as well as the XVIII Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP). The international forum will be held from 1st to 10th of June under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev.
President Plevneliev will deliver a welcome address to the delegates on 1 June, 10.00 am., Hall 3 of the NPC. Greetings to the XXXVIII ATCM participants will be delivered also by Minister of Foreign Affairs Daniel Mitov, Minister of Tourism Nikolina Angelkova, and Minister of Environment and Water Ivelina Vasileva.
Within 10 days Sofia will bring together the world Antarctic elite - 400 delegates from nearly 50 countries and organizations. Delegates and representatives of international organizations will discuss matters related to the functioning of the Antarctic Treaty system, facilitating research into the continent, environmental protection, preserving living resources in Antarctica, international cooperation and exchange of information, tourism in Antarctica, etc.
A workshop on Education and promotion of the activities related to the work of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings will be held within the ХХХVІІІ ATCM at the initiative of Brazil, Belgium, Bulgaria, Portugal and the United Kingdom.
Head of the Bulgarian delegation at the forum is Danail Chakarov, Acting Director of International Law and EU Law Directorate. The Bulgarian delegation includes representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Water, Ministry of Energy, Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, Ministry of Education and Science and others. The Bulgarian side will propose the meeting to be moderated by Ambassador Rayko Raychev, Director General of the DG Global Affairs at the MFA. Among the participants at the Committee on Environmental Protection is Prof. Hristo Pimpirev, Chairman of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI) and Deputy Head of the Bulgarian delegation, as well as scientists from BAI.
