/01.02.2019/ After the two-month biological research as part of the National Polar Research Programme has concluded, research continues in the remaining two months of the Antarctic summer in the field of earth sciences, said Prof. Christo Pimpirev, Director of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and leader of the 27th Antarctic expedition.
After the one-week field camp at Hannah Point, Livingston Island, geologists Dr. Stefan Velev and Dr. Kamen Bonev and their colleagues Brazilian Dr. Cristine Trevisan, Chilean Antarctic Institute, and Prof. Şafak Altunkaynak, Istanbul Technical University, discovered five fossilised floral remains, new for Antarctica. They are about 90 million years old, the beginning of the Late Cretaceous, when the now icy continent was covered with subtropical forests and dinosaurs were dominant. They migrated from Patagonia to the Antarctic peninsula through a temporary island bridge in the place of the Drake Passage. Through the same bridge some plant species that first appeared in Antarctica arrived in South America. At the end of the Mesozoic, Antarctica was a green continent full of life. The research by Bulgarian geologists and their colleagues helps solve global scientific problems such as the link of the southernmost continent to Patagonia and the migration of plant and animal species at the end of the Mesozoic, the warmest period in the whole Phanerozoic. /18.01.2019/ at the headquarters of the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), the second version of "Dialogues Antarctic Chile and Bulgaria" was developed. On occasion, the last written work of geologist and polar explorer, Christo Pimpirev and Gergana Lapteva, who works as coordinator of the cultural program presented Antarctic Institute of Bulgaria .Mariana Simeonova, the same organization, gave details of the activity that Bulgaria makes in Antarctica, which included a review of what has been done so far, and a description of the Antarctic Bulgarian Program, among which are the same Antarctic Institute Bulgaria, and also the National Center for Polar Studies , associated with the University of Sofia.
Lapteva, meanwhile, presented the books "Terra Australis Incognita" and "Direction South. Trip to Antarctica ". The first summarizes historical maps of Antarctica from the Middle Ages to the present and the second narrates his personal experience through the seven trips he has made to the White Continent. "I present this work to mark a double anniversary: the Antarctic Treaty and the 25th expedition to Antarctica Bulgaria ago. With Pimpirev, director of the institute, we decided to collect historical maps of Antarctica. We add more than 70, "says Lapteva. "I am very interested in history and geography and, of course, believe that Antarctica can generate a lot of interest," he concludes. Simeonova was also in charge of the presentation of a book Pimpirev, who could not attend the event. The book in question is "Antarctica. The Cold South "and tells how it is to live in the Bulgarian base" St. Kliment Ohridski "through the emotions and experiences of the same Pimpirev. Dr. Edgardo Vega, director (s) of the institute, said in this regard that "for INACH and Chile, this privileged position as a gateway to more than twenty countries obviously is both an opportunity and a responsibility. Hosting and must be able to cooperate not only from the logistical, operational or scientific, can also be done from the area of culture, construction of an imaginary in our public about the value of Antarctica ". /06.06.2018/

The geologists Dr. Kamen Bonev, Dr. Docho Dochev and Dr. Stefan Velev returned to the base with a large number of fossil samples and ore minerals after a weekly stay in unfavorable conditions in a field camp tent in a remote unexplored area. fossil. Up until their return to Bulgaria, a detailed geological map of the mentioned area will be prepared after a droning and several finishing routes. The eight robots and three Arduino plots with sensors taken to Antarctica on a Bulgarian-Portuguese project with participants Lyudmila Filipova and Prof. Nuno Pereira were successfully assembled and released to collect data. The machines are equipped with sensors that measure temperature, pressure, humidity, solar radiation, altitude, GPS data. Upon completion of the expedition, robots will be provided to 3 Bulgarian and 2 Portuguese schools where students will learn to program and measure data as if they were in Antarctica. The project is also filmed with a 3D video, with which children will be able to transfer to the icy continent in virtual reality with special glasses. In the international monitoring project investigating climate change, two scientists from Spain and one from Argentina with Bulgarian logistic support with snowmobiles and boats, in the region of our and the neighboring Spanish base, is equipped with precise scientific equipment with autonomous power supply which will transmit the received sensor data and during the southern winter when the two bases are uninhabited and canned. The two Turkish scientists involved in the expedition are completing their positioning projects (cm accuracy) using a GNSS-PPP signal and exploring ecological and climatic impacts on the island's marine and terrestrial sludge. In parallel, the logistics team - Eng. Yordan Yordanov, Stanimir Modev, eng. Miroslav Tsvyatkov, Nikolay Nikolov, Dr. Martin Lyubomirov, has included a new 60 kilowatts diesel generator in the power grid and is mounting photovoltaic panels. The construction of a spacious boat and sled hangar has been completed and the base for the forthcoming astral winter is to be preserved.

After the successful presentation of works from the contest Eco Antarctica of the students from the National School of Fine Arts "Ilia Petrov" in Punta Arenas (Chile) at the beginning of the year, selected works went to the Bulgarian polar base "Sv. Kliment Ohridski" on Livingston Island . There they were arranged in a unique outdoor exhibition in the harsh beauty of the Icy continent. Besides the pole Bulgarian exhibition enjoyed our colleagues from Portugal working on joint research projects, as well as our neighbors from the Spanish Base "Juan Carlos I".
This way of presenting the works of art we hope the issue of conservation of the White Continent to reach more people and every one of us to think about what could help to protect the unique ecosystems in Antarctica.
