The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI)
The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI) is non-profit legal body, registered by the Sofia City Court with a resolution N 14 840 dated 10.11.1993. BAI has 51 members and 4 member-entities - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", The Academy of Medicine and The Atlantic club of Bulgaria. The Chairman of The Executive Board of BAI is Prof. Christo Pimpirev.
The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute functions under the aegis of the President o Republic of Bulgaria. With a decision N 81/27.02.1998 of the Council of Ministers of Bulgaria BAI is assigned to manage the National Antarctic Program.
The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute organizes annual Antarctic campaigns and operates the Bulgarian Antarctic base “St. Kliment Ohridski” on Livingston Island,South Shetland Islands. In the expeditions take part specialists in different areas: geology, geochemistry, geophysics, meteorology, glaciology,
biology, medicine, etc. Their investigations result in many publications in scientific press and books.
BAI maintains contacts on a regular basis with the Antarctic Programs of Spain,Portugal, Argentina, Great Britain, Russia,Germany, Brazil, Chile,Uruguayand other countries.
BAI is a member of COMNAP (Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs), SCALOP (Standing Committee on Antarctic Logistics and Operations), EPB (European Polar Board) and SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research).
