The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI) is noncommercial corporation society, registries by Tribunal of Sofia with a decision N 14 840 from 10.11.1993. BAI has 51 members and 4 collective members - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", The Academy of Medicine and The Atlantic club of Bulgaria. The Chairman of The Executive Council of BAI is Prof. Christo Pimpirev.
The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute working under the aegis of the President of Republic of Bulgaria. With a decision N 81/27.02.1998 of the Council of Ministers of Republic of Bulgaria BAI is a National Operator of The National Antarctic Program.
The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute organizes annual Antarctic campaigns and operates the Bulgarian Antarctic base “St. Kliment Ohridski”,
Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands. In the expeditions have specialists of different areas: geology, geochemistry, geophysics, meteorology, glaciology, biology, medicine and etc. These investigations are published in many scientific editions and books.
BAI is in contact with the Antarctic Programs of Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Great Britain, Russia, Germany, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and
etc.
BAI is a member of COMNAP (Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs), SCALOP (Standing Committee on Antarctic Logistics and Operations), EPB (European Polar Board) and SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research).
