Art in the broadest sense represents ability to submit certain information to the viewer or listener through a form of aesthetic perception and reproduction of the world through subjective knowledge and impressions of the artist. It is also a form of social consciousness and an integral part of the culture of humanity.
Environmental art or "Eco Art" is a contemporary art form aimed at the works in harmony with the environment. It was created by artists who are concerned about local and global environmental situations, believing that the restoration of man's relationship with nature is one of the priorities of modern society.
In 2016 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Madrid Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty, regulating measures and conditions for environmental protection in Antarctica. According to its provisions:

In connection with this Anniversary Bulgarian Antarctic Institute’s project ECO ANTARCTICA 2015-2016 in cooperation with the National School of Fine Arts "Ilia Petrov" launched a project through which students will express their point of view on the issues related to the ecology of the ice continent. Such initiatives are already happening in Spain, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and others.
The works will be divided into four categories: sculpture, painting, drawing and graphic design. In the end of November after evaluation by a specialized jury will be awarded three works in each category.
On November 24, the eve of the patronal feast of the Bulgarian Polar Base and Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" selected works will be exhibited in the lobby of the University, which will be part of initiatives to mark the patronal feast of the Bulgarian Base and Sofia University - November 25th and December 1st the International Day of Antarctica.
In January 2016 the exhibition will be presented in Punta Arenas (Chile), at the invitation of the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH) and Honorary Consulate of Bulgaria in Chile. Famous Chilean artist Paola Vezzani and Cultural Department INACH are the main initiators of the event.
The exhibition, accompanied by presentations presenting cultural programs of Chile and Bulgaria will take place on January 15, 2016 in Punta Arenas.
Immediately after the presentation of the works in Punta Arenas depart for Bulgarian Base in Livingston Island, where it will be presented unique art exhibition on the Icy continent.
Through these artistic expressions we hope the issue of conservation of the White Continent to reach more people and every one of us to think about what could help to preserve the unique ecosystems in Antarctica.

THIRD STAGE - BULGARIAN BASE "ST. KLIMENT OHRIDSKI"
After the successful presentation of works from the contest Eco Antarctica of the students from the National School of Fine Arts "Ilia Petrov" in Punta Arenas (Chile) at the beginning of the year, selected works went to the Bulgarian polar base "Sv. Kliment Ohridski" on Livingston Island . There they were arranged in a unique outdoor exhibition in the harsh beauty of the Icy continent. Besides the pole Bulgarian exhibition enjoyed our colleagues from Portugal working on joint research projects, as well as our neighbors from the Spanish Base "Juan Carlos I".

SECOND STAGE - PUNTA ARENAS (CHILE), 15th of January 2016
“Antarctic Art of Bulgaria and Chile” opens in Punta Arenas.The exhibition “Antarctic Art of Bulgaria and Chile”, organized by the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI) and the University of Magallanes, opened to the public with great success at “The Gallery”, in the southern city of Punta Arenas, Chile.
The artworks on display belong to the Bulgarian project “Eco Antarctica” and the Chilean project “Antarctic Bestiary”. Paola Vezzani, Chilean sculptor and academic at the University of Magallanes, said she is honored to have this exhibition as the first activity of “The Gallery”, which she leads, and she is also grateful for the excellent turnout at the opening of this exhibition. “One way to bring Antarctica to the general public is through culture and the arts, and it can certainly be transformed into topics of discussion, where we are able to look the White Continent from different perspectives, not only the scientific one, but also with all the contributions that can be made to Mankind”, said Vezzani. The Bulgarian consul in Punta Arenas, Andrés Pivcevic, was also present and was happy to see initiatives of this nature. Pivcevic stressed how relevant Bulgaria has been on the Antarctic continent considering the size of the country, which somehow has resulted in several places in Antarctica being baptized with Bulgarian names. The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute is actively working to bring Antarctica to a wider audience and, in this sense, has worked with the National School of Fine Arts “Ilia Petrov” in Sofia (ENBA), one of the most prestigious art schools in Bulgaria. The “Eco Antarctica” project seeks to combine the aesthetic possibilities of contemporary art and current issues relating to the environment and the influence of human activities. These works were created over the past year and the best of them are exhibited this weekend in Punta Arenas, before their trip to the Bulgarian Antarctic base “St. Kliment Ohridski”, on Livingston Island. Meanwhile, the “Antarctic Bestiary” project, created by Paola Vezzani and Oscar Barrientos and funded by Fondart, is an investigation that ended in texts and sculptures from the mythological beings that yesteryear populated the nautical charts. |
With great interest and widely covered in the local media in the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), Punta Arenas went the conference, titled "Antarctic Dialogues Chile-Bulgaria, art and culture". The event is an initiative of the Chilean Antarctic Institute, Paola Vezzani, a sculptor from University of Magellan and is under the patronage of the Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in Chile Mr. Andres Pivchevich.
Republic of Bulgaria was represented by Gergana Lapteva and Dragomir Mateev of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI). Republic of Chile was represented by the Director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute Dr. Jose Retamales and Regional Director of the Council for Culture and Arts of Chile, Mr. Gonzalo Baskunyan. On the eve of the patronal feast of the Bulgarian polar base and Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" the best works of the project "Eco Antarctica 2015-2016" was displayed in the lobby of the University. Their authors received special certificates and prizes from Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and the National School of Fine Arts "Ilia Petrov".
In January, the works will be presented in the Chilean city Punta Arenas at the invitation of the Chilean Antarctic Institute. The exhibition will be accompanied by a presentation of Gergana Lapteva and Dragomir Mateev (BAI), which presenting the cultural program ECOANTAR of Bulgaria to Antarctica, whose goal is through art in its various forms to address the need and responsibility to care for Antarctic heritage and environment of our planet. Then the works will go for the Bulgarian base on Livingston Island, where they will be exhibited in a unique exhibition. The event is on the eve of the International Day of Antarctica – 1st of December is part of initiatives to mark the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Madrid Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, which marks in 2016. The young artists present paintings, posters, prints and sculpture. Through their works, they express their attitude to the continent, a piece of which is the Bulgarian land. prof.
