In the period between 1993 and the year 2015 Bulgaria organized 24 successive Antarctic campaigns (more information on Expedition's menu bar)
The Institute organizes annual Antarctic campaigns and operates the Bulgarian Antarctic base “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The Bulgarian government is represented at the Executive board of the Institute by a Vice-minister of the Ministry of Foreig Affairs. Antarctic activities are planned by the Executive board upon recommendation by the Scientific Board of the Institute.
The National Antarctic Program is funded predominantly by the Ministry of Education and Science, and partly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Environment and Waters. The Bulgarian Antarctic activities are performed under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
The main topics cover: Earth sciences - such as geology, geomorphology, geophysics, physics, glaciology, meteorology, cartography, Life sciences - zoology, botanics and
ecology and human medicine. Research work is project based – be it by research staff of thr
Universityor the Academy of sciences. The emphasis is put on applying interdisciplinary approach towards understanding the pattern and processes in major polar nature systems and their evolution.
