The 20th Bulgarian Antarctic expedition has ended successfully
The 20th Bulgarian Antarctic expedition has ended successfully. Satisfied with their work, scientists, doctors, and journalists who came back from Antarctica met with reporters to tell more about their experience on the ice continent. That people who go to Antarctica want to return. They worked 13,000 kilometers away from Bulgaria between November and February. On the Livingston Island there is already a Bulgarian post station, Orthodox chapel and a Bulgarian village. The scientists worked on 7 different scientific projects, four of which were in cooperation with scientists from the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, and Japan. The work with the Japanese scientists was very interesting. They used no-pilot airplanes that made unique pictures of the Deception Island, some 100 kilometers away from Livingston.”
One of the focuses of the researches carried out on the Livingston Island was global climactic change. This time the scientists took skin samples from 35 seals. They will be analyzed in Sofia, where scientists will look for possible mutations due to increased UV radiation.
Antarctica is a place far away from civilization and in such extreme conditions human qualities like kindness and solidarity are extremely valuable. It is difficult for conflicts to emerge on Antarctica, as people know they cannot just leave if one insulted you for example. Living there is a test for the tolerance and patience and it teaches us to be a united community.
